The need for consuming protein after your workout to repair the muscle damaging effects of training have been long documented. Research shows that in order to maximize your workout, you must immediately consume proteins that stimulate muscle protein synthesis (the making of muscle). You must also consume proteins that protect and keep your muscle (anti-catabolic). Amino acids, especially branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and L-glutamine, are the most powerful nutrients of their kind with which to stimulate muscle protein synthesis and inhibit muscle protein catabolism. Glutamine makes up approximately 60% of skeletal muscle protein while the branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine) constitute approximately 35% of skeletal muscle protein. An increasing amount of literature suggests that these amino acids play the most significant role in stimulating protein synthesis and protecting your body from muscle protein breakdown.
Research also shows that the digesting rate of protein is a critical regulator of muscle growth and muscle protection and that different proteins are better equipped at doing each. It is this combination that is highly coveted in order to achieve peak muscle power output. The major proteins in which to achieve different digestion rates as well as supply these most powerful amino acids to muscle tissue are the milk proteins, whey and casein which differ in very important aspects.
Whey Protein Stimulates Protein Synthesis
Whey proteins have be shown to be far superior for muscle growth as they are rapidly absorbed, making them exceptionally valuable after a workout. They are emptied from the stomach quickly, resulting in a rapid and large increase in amino acids in the blood. It is this increase of amino acids that makes whey protein so unique as it sends signals to your body to increase the manufacturing of muscle tissue. While whey protein is superior in this regard, it is important to understand that this positive effect leads to a short and limited supply of aminos and does not stop long term muscle protein loss.
Casein Protects Hard Earned Muscle
The superior long-lasting effect of casein provides the slowest rate of digestion which results in a slow but steady release of amino acids into circulation for the longest duration of time. Studies show that casein is superior in providing a sustained anti-catabolic (muscle protecting) environment while one study resulted in a 34% reduction in muscle protein breakdown over a 7-hour period.
Wilk's patented Amino 764 ™
This complex contains the same patented blend of protein-digesting enzymes evaluated in an open label study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in July of 2008. Compared to the control group, subjects who ingested a combination of 50 g of protein from Gargantuan more than doubled their speed of amino acid absorption and increased nitrogen retention by 32%. Both of these properties favor greater gains in muscle growth, repair and recovery. Remarkably, amino acid levels still appeared to be on the rise after 4 hours in the subjects who ingested Gargantuan.
Ingredient Blend # 2
Wilk's Patented Carbo Matrix
Branched and Linear Chain Carbohydrate Restoration Complex (containing alpha-(1,4) linked Glucose Polymers), Glucose Transport and Lean Tissue Support Complex (containing Chromium Picolinate and Cinnulin-PF® (Aqueous Cinnamon Extract) (Bark)),Carbogen® (Patented Carbohydrate Maximizing Enzyme Complex). New Rules For Post Workout Carbohydrates - Low DE Maltodextrins Low DE (Dextrose Equivalent) maltodextrins have what is perhaps the most unique and intriguing qualities for post workout carbohydrates as they are complex and can deliver more carbohydrates while keeping a low osmolality. Osmolality plays a large role in the speed at which the carbohydrate source is absorbed. While simple sugar mixtures can have a low osmolality, research shows that no matter how much you consume, approximately only 20g of simple sugars can absorb in an hour making them extremely inadequate for post workout.
Studies on low DE complex carbohydrates have shown show that they store more glycogen in athletes than other sources of carbohydrates such as rice and pasta while athletes consuming low DE complex carbohydrates have been more successful in performance times. Studies also show that consuming and absorbing carbohydrates within 30 minutes of completing a workout, they will synthesize twice as much muscle glycogen as waiting two hours for consumption or absorption. This gives you an idea of critical the right post workout carbohydrate source is.
Improving Carbohydrate Utilization - Carbogen™, Cinnulin PF® and Chromium Carbogen™ is a patented, proprietary enzyme system which has been clinically shown to enhance the conversion of carbohydrates into usable energy by the body. Studies show improvements in blood glucose (23% increase), time to exhaustion (43% increase) and blood acid levels (275% decrease) just 30 minutes into an intense workout. Cinnulin PF® and Chromium have also been shown to support glucose transport mechanisms by enhancing the insulin signaling pathways and activating insulin receptors leading to enhanced glucose uptake in muscle cells.
Ingredient Blend #3
Wilk's patented Omega 332™
Flax Seed Powder [containing omega 3 (alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)), omega 6 (linoleic acid (LA)), omega 9 (oleic acid (OA)) and lignans], MCT's (Medium Chain Triglycerides), Safflower (naturally containing CLA (conjugated linoleic acid)).
In addition to providing athletes with essential polyunsaturated omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, this complex supplies medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) for fast-acting energy and naturally occurring conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) to promote nutrient repartitioning and optimize the athlete's body composition.
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are the building blocks for prostaglandins, a class of hormones that regulate numerous bodily functions, including cellular responses, immune function, and hormone synthesis. Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to help increase stamina, recovery time, lean muscle, brain function and reduce inflammation and joint pain. |
